Most fractures in the foot heal with immobilization in a boot or cast. There are some fractures do not heal and this condition is called a non-union. Nancy had sustained a stress fracture of her foot several months before she presented to our office. Despite immobilization in a walking boot her x-rays had shown that her 5th metatarsal fracture had not healed. She had pain with everyday activities and could not walk for exercise. We spoke about her options and she opted for surgical treatment. The fracture was bone grafted and stabilized with a plate. At three months after surgery she was pain free and had returned to all activities.
